Design Longevity: Why Proper Care of Your New Pieces Matters

You’ve just invested in a beautiful new space including new cabinetry, countertops, flooring, or furnishings - and naturally, you want them to look just as good years from now as they do today! But here’s the truth: many items show wear and tear not because of time, but because of improper care or cleaning methods.

Why Upkeep Matters

  • Many materials require specific care instructions, such as natural stone, wood, certain metals, paint finishes, etc.

  • Improper cleaning products or habits like using harsh cleaners on soft surfaces, can damage finishes and reduce the longevity of the item

  • Maintenance isn't always aesthetic - but it protects functionality and keeps away warped floors, scratched counters, dull finishes, standing, etc.

Common Mistakes That Lead to Damage

These are just a few common mistakes that my clients are prone to making - and some may be things you currently do as well without knowing it!

  • Over-wetting wood flooring and finishes = warped floors and peeling finishes/ use a damp microfiber mop + dry right after instead

  • Scrubbing handheld tools = scratched metals, tiles, or painted walls/ use a microfiber cloth or soft sponge in place of those abrasive scrubbers

  • Using all-purpose cleaners on all materials and finishes = discoloration, ruined finishes and streak marks/ use gentle dish soap or tough spots or finish-specific cleaners such as matte metals, stainless steel, soft woods, etc.

As a reputable designer, I always provide my clients with a small packet that consists of all the warranty and care information or your new materials from their project to ensure proper care and longevity.

How to Protect Your Investment

A little time and care now will protect your new space for years to come!

  • Invest in quality cleaning tools and cleaners right in the beginning

  • Review manufacturer care instructions

  • Create a regular cleaning schedule for each item/material

  • Avoid moisture throughout the home

  • Reseal natural finishes
